Organic chicken from Hovelsrud farm
Organic chickens from Hovelsrud have enjoyed plenty of space, natural light, a stimulating environment, organic feed, and plenty of time to grow. Animal welfare in focus: Chickens are free to roam a large garden with fruit trees. Inside, they have plenty of space, live in smaller groups, and have sand, soil, hay, minerals, and perches. The chicken barn has windows providing daylight, and also has a large patio. A chicken that has enjoyed a good life, will taste good – and chickens from Hovelsrud are served at Norway's best restaurants.

Norway's first chicken producer awarded the Animal Protection Label
At Hovelsrud, we are committed to provide our chickens with as good a life as possible. Animal welfare is the most important reason for us converting to organic chicken farming. We are thus proud to be the first chicken producer in Norway to be awarded the Animal Protection Label.
The label guarantees that the farmed animals have enjoyed more space, a healthier body, and more activity. Chickens sold under this label shall have had the opportunity to roam in a stimulating and spacious environment. The criteria for being awarded the Animal Protection Label have been set by the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance’s team of specialists made up of veterinaries, biologists, and agronomists.
Feel free to combine your stay with a tour of Hovelsrud’s historic garden
The garden at Hovelsrud farm at Helgøya has been restored to its former 1840s glory. Among its accolades are the National Cultural Landscape Award for 2012 and the Europa Nostra Award for 2014.
A tour of this beautiful and spectacular garden complex is highly recommended. Stroll along gravel paths, between berry shrubs and fruit trees, and among pavilions and water features – with the glimmering Mjøsa as backdrop. You will also find a large, plentiful kitchen garden with historic plants and vegetables growing in beautiful rows and patterns. Berries and fruit from the garden are used for juices and jam sold in Hovelsrud’s farm shop and in selected delicatessen.
